Lost a Pet?

We understand how stressful it is when a pet goes missing. Follow the steps below to give yourself the best chance of being reunited:

Step 1: Check Our Found Pets Page

SafeHaven can only accept stray cats due to county regulations. If you’re missing a cat, please visit our Found Pets page to see if your pet is currently in our care.

New strays arrive daily, so check back often. If you don’t see your pet listed, you can also fill out an online lost report.

Missing a dog? Contact Linn County Animal Control, which handles all stray dogs in our area.

Step 2: Check with Other Local Agencies

Sometimes pets are taken to an agency the finder is familiar with, even if it’s not the closest one. Be sure to contact or visit the following:

Also try:

Talking to neighbors
Putting up flyers around the area your pet went missing
Posting in the Lost & Found and Pets sections on Craigslist
Checking local Facebook lost pet groups

Cats are often found within a 3–5 house radius. Dogs may travel farther distances.

Step 3: Update Your Pet’s Microchip Info

If your pet is microchipped, contact the microchip company to:

Report your pet as lost
Confirm that your contact information is up to date

Veterinary clinics and shelters will scan found pets for a chip, so keeping your info current is essential.

Step 4: Let Us Know if You Reunite

If you’ve found your pet, please notify us so we can remove the lost report from our system. You can contact us at 541.928.2789.

Found a Pet?

Thank you for helping a lost animal—your compassion could be the reason a beloved pet is reunited with their family. If the pet is sick or injured and needs immediate care, please contact a local emergency veterinary clinic right away. Otherwise, follow the steps below to help them get home safely:

Step 1: Ask Around

Start close to where the pet was found:

Talk to nearby neighbors to see if anyone recognizes the animal
Post flyers with a clear photo and your contact information in the area
Share in local Facebook groups or community pages

Step 2: Check for a Microchip

Visit a veterinary clinic or animal shelter to have the animal scanned for a microchip. If a chip is found, it may contain the owner’s contact information and help reunite them quickly.

Step 3: Register with Petco Love Lost

Petco Love Lost is a free national database that uses photo-matching technology to help reunite lost pets with their families.

Easy, fast, and free to use

Step 4: Contact Local Rescues for Support

If you are unable to locate the owner and cannot continue to care for the pet, please reach out to local rescues for help.

SafeHaven does not hold the county contract for stray dogs. All found dogs and puppies must be taken to:

SafeHaven does partner with Linn County and may transfer adoptable dogs into our care if space allows.

For Cats & Kittens

There are currently no county services for stray cats or kittens. SafeHaven makes every effort to help as many as possible, depending on available space or foster homes.

If the cat is friendly, please complete our Stray Cat Questionnaire
If the cat is feral, we can offer food and limited support, but we are not able to house or adopt out feral cats

Donations are appreciated but not required. Your support helps us care for the animals we take in.
