Meet Sara! She has been a volunteer at the Lebanon Gift & Thrift since 2020. Read her words below to learn more about Sara and her experience volunteering:
Hi! I’m Sara, and I’ve been volunteering at the Lebanon Gift & Thrift since October 2020. My first connection with SafeHaven was a few years earlier in 2017, when I adopted my cat Clementine! She’s my pride and joy and has the impressive ability of taking up most of a full-size bed all by herself.
I live in Sweet Home, and I recently went back to school to study language and web development. When I’m not picking apart words or breaking things on my computer, I’m a huge music buff (my roots are mainly in 60s and 70s rock but I listen to a bit of everything!) and I love comedy, documentaries, and getting as much direct sunlight as possible.
Random fun fact: I can read and write in Danish.
Why did you start volunteering at SafeHaven?
It goes without saying that 2020 wasn’t the best year for many of us, and volunteering seemed like a great way to both do something positive and enjoy some social interaction. When I saw in the SafeHaven email newsletter that the Lebanon location was looking for volunteers, it sounded like a great opportunity! My cat is a joy in my life (even when she’s hogging the bed or lying in wait to steal my chair as soon as I get up) so I’m happy to be able to pay it back a little bit.
How has volunteering impacted your life?
It’s made me feel more connected to my community – especially since I moved to the area as an adult (I’m from Scio originally), it’s been wonderful to get to know people and be a part of something that makes a difference.
What is your favorite part of volunteering?
I love the people I get to work with! I’ve had great experiences with our customers and other volunteers, and Rose and Heidi are incredibly lovely people to be around who work hard to make the store a really enjoyable place to be. Also: when people bring their dogs in. 🙂
Thank you to Sara for being such a valuable part of the Gift & Thrift team! We appreciate all that you do!
