Rehoming Your Pet

Self-rehoming – finding a new home for your pet directly – is often the best solution when you need to find a new home for your pet.

Step One: Consider the Alternatives

At SafeHaven Humane Society, our goal is to help keep pets with the people who love them. Before surrendering your pet, we encourage you to explore the support options available. Visit our Resources to Keep Your Pet page for information on low-cost veterinary care, training resources, and pet food assistance. If you have additional questions, please reach out to us at info@safehavenhumane.com.

Step Two: Pet Rehoming

Rehoming your pet directly from your home is often the most compassionate and low-stress option. This approach allows your pet to stay in a familiar environment while a new family is found, helping to maintain their routine and reduce anxiety. Self-rehoming also gives you the opportunity to choose the right fit for your pet and, if both parties agree, stay in touch with the new owners.

Self-Rehoming Tips

Rehoming your pet yourself can be a safe, compassionate, and effective alternative to surrendering them to a shelter. Here are a few tips to help you get started:

  • Use Social Media:
Local rehoming Facebook groups are a great way to connect with potential adopters in your area. Be sure to include high-quality photos and write an honest, positive description of your pet’s personality, preferences, and needs. You can also utilize other social media platforms.
  • Use Trusted Platforms:
Sites such as Home To Home™ and ReHome are online platforms that help pet guardians rehome their animals directly without bringing them to a shelter. Both sites gives you the chance to share detailed information about your pet and help adopters make informed decisions by learning about the pet’s behavior and personality directly from you. It’s a thoughtful, low-stress approach that benefits both pets and people.

Surrendering to SafeHaven

We understand that making the decision to surrender a beloved pet is never easy. If you’ve explored all other options and feel that surrendering your pet to SafeHaven Humane Society is the best path forward, we’re here to help guide you through the process.

To begin, please complete the surrender form below. A separate form is needed for each animal, though litters under 3 months old can be included on a single form. All surrenders are done by appointment to ensure we can provide each pet with the care and attention they deserve.

After we receive your form, a member of our team will review the information and reach out to discuss your pet’s needs and the next steps. Please note that submitting a surrender form does not guarantee SafeHaven will be able to accept your pet, but we will do our best to help.

If you have any questions or need support during this process, please don’t hesitate to contact our Intake Department at intake@safehavenhumane.com or call 541-928-2789. You’re not alone—we’re here to help.

What Your Pet Receives in Our Care

While your pet is with us, we make sure they’re healthy, comfortable, and loved. Every animal that enters SafeHaven receives:

  • Up-to-date vaccinations
  • Needed surgeries, including spay or neuter
  • Flea control and deworming treatments
  • A microchip for permanent identification
  • Dental cleaning if recommended by our veterinarian
  • Plenty of affection and enrichment from our devoted staff and volunteers

Why We Ask for a Surrender Fee
Providing this level of care has real costs. To help cover them, we request a surrender fee of:

  • $100 per individual pet

  • $150 per litter (puppies or kittens under three months)

These fees allow us to give every animal the best chance at a healthy, happy future in a new home. If you have questions or concerns about the surrender fee, please let our Intake team know.
