Doggy Day Out | FAQs

Do I need to bring my own supplies?

SafeHaven provides a leash and/or harness best suited for your dog, along with a backpack of supplies. Additionally in your backpack, you will find a folder with a report card, recommended places to go, FAQs, social media ideas and links, and SafeHaven contact information.

How long can I take a dog out of the shelter?

It’s up to you! You can take them on a car ride to go get a pup-cone, take them to your home for a few hours for playtime and naps, or hang out with them around town for a the day. For day trips, all dogs must be returned to our shelter by 4 p.m. If the animal does a sleep over the dog must return to the shelter by 11 a.m. the next morning. Alternatively, if you wish to spend more time with your dog, you can become their official foster!

Why are these outings so important?

Doggy Day Out give our dogs a much-needed “break” from the stress of the shelter. They also help us learn about that pet’s behavior and their likes, dislikes. This helps us find them homes faster.

What can I do with a pet on a Doggy Day Out?

  • Take naps
  • Play fetch in the backyard
  • Go on a car ride to get a snack
  • Go on a hike
  • Hang out with friends to meet new people

What can I not do with a dog?

  • Go to a dog park
  • Interact with other pets in the home
  • Give the dog away to someone
  • Let the dog off leash in a public and/or unfenced area

Do I need to live in Albany to participate?

No! You don’t need to be a resident of our immediate community to participate in Doggy’s Day Out. However, we do ask that you stay within a reasonable distance of our shelter during your outing and keep your phone on you in case we need to reach you!

Do I need training?

No special training is needed. When you arrive at our shelter, you will be met by our staff who will walk you through the rules and the contents of your day-out backpack!

Which dogs are eligible to go on a Doggy Day Out?

Most adult dogs are eligible for this program. Staff will evaluate the dogs during their stay at the shelter and match you with a dog they feel will do best on what you plan to do on your doggy day out. Dogs under 6 months of age can only qualify if they have received 4 rounds of vaccinations.

What if I want to take a dog out, but I am not able to handle a large, energetic, or strong dog?

Due to the constant flux of dogs in and out of the shelter, we cannot guarantee requests to be paired with a dog that excludes specific breeds, energy levels or sizes. While we are unable to make any guarantees, with many dogs in our shelter at all times, we will likely have a dog that matches your handling abilities–so c’mon down!

Share your adventure!

Be sure to post about your fun day with your shelter dog on social media! Potential adopters love to see adoptable dogs enjoying a day outside of the shelter. You never know who may be watching, and your friends can always share your post to reach even more people.
