Back in August, we received a call from a rescue urgently asking us to consider taking in Phoenix, a six-year-old deaf cattle dog. They were fully expecting us to say no — and they were stunned when I kept asking questions. For the first time, there was a real possibility that Phoenix might actually make it out of their overcrowded shelter.
They had nothing but wonderful things to say about her: she was social, playful, great with other dogs, clean in her kennel, and showed almost no signs of kennel stress. Naturally, I had to ask why a dog like this was still waiting.
They gave us three reasons:

After hearing her story and learning how truly special she was, we knew we couldn’t say no. Three weeks later, Phoenix was on her way to SafeHaven.
And she was exactly as they described — sweet, social, gentle, and friendly with other dogs. During her intake exam, we discovered she was heartworm-positive, which slowed down her path to adoption, but she received treatment and is scheduled for a recheck in early December.
While Phoenix does face challenges — finding a home familiar with caring for a deaf dog, living with the fact that her coat will likely never fully grow back, and completing heartworm treatment — there is one thing she will never face here at SafeHaven: a time limit. Phoenix will stay with us as long as she needs. She is loved, safe, and surrounded by people who believe her perfect family is out there. And until they find her, we’re enjoying every moment with this incredible girl.
Update: Phoenix was adopted and is now happily living with her forever family!

Garfield was surrendered to SafeHaven just before Halloween, and he has been not-so-patiently waiting for his forever home ever since. His previous owner let us know that Garfield is deaf, and because of that… he has absolutely no idea how loud he is. If you’ve visited the shelter recently, you may have heard what sounds like a very upset cat from anywhere in the building. Don’t worry — he’s perfectly fine. His deep, booming meow just tends to catch us off guard! Really, he’s just calling out for attention.
Garfield is also a big boy (fitting for his name), so he doesn’t fit comfortably in a standard kennel. He’s currently living in one of the small viewing rooms on our adoption floor, and all that noise? That’s just his way of making sure you know he’s behind the door and ready for visitors.
Despite his dramatic vocal abilities, Garfield is incredibly sweet, full of personality, and very affectionate. He’s not a huge fan of carriers, but he loves to roam, stretch out, and lounge like the king he is.
It may take us a little time for the right home to come around but for now Garfield is warm, cozy and gets to spend his days bossing the staff and volunteers around- just the way he likes it!
Update: Garfield was adopted and now in his forever home.
